Tradition…

In Indian tradition, the student gains knowledge only by the blessing of the gurus and teachers who came before him or her in their lineage. Just as we inherit the qualities of our ancestors through DNA, such is spiritual knowledge inherited from generation to generation, by the blessing of the guru.

Humbly recognising tradition, lineage, and the source of our teachings is vital on the spiritual path.

Below are some of the gurus, teachers and saints in need of recognition for the establishment, preservation and propagation of the knowledge of sanatana dharma – on which Om Tirth Yoga bases its teachings.

Adi Shankaracharya

Born into a simple brahmin family in Kerala around 8th century A.D in Kaladi, Adi Shankaracharya is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva.

In childhood he showed a great inclination towards spiritual knowledge. He was interested in sannyasa and wanted to lead a meaningful life, detached from the worldly pleasures.

He began his life as an ascetic from the age of 7, with the blessing of his mother, and began walking India in search of a guru.

On the banks of River Narmada he met his guru, a sage named Govinda Bhagavatpada. Under his tutelage, Shankaracharya gained expertise in different forms of yoga including hatha, raja and jnana yoga. Read more...

Sadhvi Jagat Giri Maa

Sadhvi Jagat Giri Maa – known to her devotees as just “Maa” – is an exceptionally accomplished saint in modern times. She is a monk in the order of Juna Akhara – the ancient tradition of holy Naga Sadhus, in the lineage of Adi Shankaracharya.

She was a spiritually awakened soul since childhood, and her detachment towards the world and devotion to the spiritual tradition took her to the highest awakening through the paths of tantra and bhakti yoga, under the guidance of her guru, Mahanta Himalaya Giriji Maharaj.

Her life is an excellent example of discipline, simplicity, and focus for aspiring spiritual seekers. Her constant awareness of spiritual realm gives assurance to spiritual seekers that the understanding and guidance from the tradition, and teachers such as her, can make humans capable of much more than the everyday struggle of maya. Mahant Hriday Giri ji Maharaj

Mahanta Hriday Giriji Maharaj – known often as just Guruji – is the disciple and successor of Maa, and a sannyasi of Juna Akhara in the lineage of Adi Shankaracharya.

Born into a brahmin family, he was blessed with detachment from worldly distractions (known as vairagya) and, like Adi Shakaracharya, left home at a very young age in search of spiritual enlightenment.

After wandering and living with many sadhus, he finally met his Guru Maa when he was still a child. He was trained under her strict guidance for many years, before being initiated as sannyasi.

He is learned in the knowledge of Advaita Vedanta, tantra and bhakti yoga, and an exceptional orator for the cause of dharma. He is one of the finest living examples of a disciple in modern times – the most difficult duty for spiritual seekers. Read more...

Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati JI

Swami Niranjananada Saraswati ji Maharaj, often known as Swami Niranjan, is an exceptional personality in Indian spiritual tradition. He uniquely combines tradition with modernity – the rarest of rare talents – making him an accessible and charismatic source of wisdom on all aspects of yogic philosophy, practices and lifestyle. Indeed he has given the world many classic books on yoga, tantra and tradition of spirituality.

Born into a family of disciples of Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati of Munger, he received extensive training in yogic and spiritual sciences since birth under the tutelage of his Guru, and lived with him since the age of four.

Initiated in the Sannyasa tradition at the age of ten, in his youth he was sent to live in various countries, acquiring an understanding of different cultures and helping establish yoga ashrams and centers across the globe.

He is the successor to Swami Satyananda and, in turn, also carries the legacy of his Guru, Swami Shivananda Saraswati ji Maharaj of Rishikesh, by following the dharma of a disciple in the truest, most traditional sense.

Om first met Swami Niranjanananda in 2011. For a number of years Om lived at his ashram, learning about yoga, tantra and vedanta under his guidance. The he time spent with Swamiji guided Om’s understanding of Indian spiritual tradition beyond yoga, greatly helping his journey on the spiritual path.

The love, care and guidance of Swamiji provided the initial impetus for Om’s deepening spiritual journey in the path of Sanatana Dharma, and ultimately led him to Guruji, Guru Maa and Juna Akhara. For this, we are forever grateful.

Recognising, preserving and celebrating lineage and tradition in spirituality is a matter close to Om’s heart.

OmTirth Yoga was established in 2020 with the intention to spread Sanatana Dharma, preserve knowledge and spread the authentic teachings of Indian spirituality.

By protecting, preserving, and authentically sharing this ancient knowledge, Om is serving both his tradition and his gurus.
